Dry Needling
What is dry needling?
Dry needling is an invasive procedure, where our certified physiotherapist will use a fine needle or acupuncture needle to insert into the trigger point of the targeted muscle. Trigger point is a hyperirritable spot, a palpable nodule in the taut bands of the skeletal muscle which can cause localized or referral pain, muscle weakness and decreased range of motion. This mechanical stimulation of the trigger point can cause an analgesic effect and may stimulate a local twitch response which further decreases the pain.
Who will benefit from dry needling?
It has been proven that dry needling is safe and effective to treat various musculoskeletal issues, which include overuse injuries, acute and chronic injuries, neck pain, headache, back pain, tennis elbow, golfer elbow, knee pain, hip pain and so on. After a comprehensive assessment of your condition, our physiotherapist will let you know whether dry needling is the best course of treatment for you.
Are there any side effects or risks of dry needling?
It is common to have some mild side effects from dry needling but serious side effects are rare. The most common side effects are:
- Temporary muscle soreness
- Mild bleeding
- Bruising
A new and sterile needle is used to prevent any risk of blood borne disease.
